THE WALTER PORKY WHITE SCHOLARSHIP FUND

An annual award to a Native student who is enrolled in an environmental or natural resources program at the undergraduate level.
MIGIZI Communications, Inc. honors in perpetuity the memory of Walter "Porky" White, renowned Ojibwe spiritual leader and teacher. Throughout his life, he was a student of the environment, an expert in many areas related to conserving natural resources, and a believer in the oneness of human beings with all that exists in the natural world. Scholarships are open to students enrolled in an accredited institution of higher education in the U.S., pursuing a graduate or undergraduate degree in environmental science, natural resource management, biology, marine biology, or related disciplines.


THE MADELINE MOOSE SCHOLARSHIP FUND

An annual award will be made to a Native student who is enrolled in an Ojibwe Language and Culture program at the undergraduate level.
On December 18, 2000 Madeline M. Moose passed into the spirit world at the age of 71 years. Madeline had been the MIGIZI Sugarbush camp co-director with Porky White from 1986 to 2000. She was the lead American Indian cultural teacher for the MIGIZI Summer Leadership Camps in the Boundary Waters. She taught thousands of American Indian students cultural lessons in food production, survival, food and plant gathering, and how lead others beginning with leading oneself.  MIGIZI Communications created the Madeline M. Moose scholarship fund for American Indian students who are studying Ojibwe language and culture in American colleges and universities, particularly tribal colleges and universities.


THE FIRST PERSON JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIP FUND

An annual award to a Native student who is enrolled in a journalism program at the undergraduate or graduate level.  MIGIZI Communications, Inc. is dedicated to expanding opportunities for American Indian journalism students. MIGIZI annually awards an undergraduate or graduate scholarship to students committed to journalism careers.  The scholarship is awarded in the name of the news service First Person Radio and First Person Productions, so named in honor of the name many tribes have for themselves, that of "first peoples" or "first persons."



To apply for one of these scholarships please send the following to MIGIZI Communications by June 1, 2008:


1.  A completed application

2.  An essay of about 500 words (1-2 pages) specific to the scholarship you are applying for.
Applicants for the Madeline Moose Scholarship Fund.  First, tell how you are currently involved in Ojibwe language and/or revitalization.  Second, explain why continuing the Ojibwe language and culture is important to future generations.  Third, describe your plans for the future—how do you plan on using your studies to help the community?
Applicants for the Walter 'Porky' White Scholarship Fund.  First, tell how you are currently involved in protecting / working with the environmental and natural resources.  Second, explain why it is important to protect and study our environment/natural resources.  Third, describe your plans for the future—how do you plan on using your studies to help the community?
Applicants for the First Person Journalism Scholarship Fund. First, tell how and in what capacity you have been involved in journalism.  Second, explain why journalism is important.  Third, describe your plans for the future—how do you plan on using your studies to help the community?
 
3.  Two letters of recommendation.  At least one letter must be from a teacher at your school.  The other may be from a teacher or another adult who is not related to you, and who can describe your background and your involvement in the community.

4.  A copy of your FAFSA.  If you have not completed your FAFSA, you must submit your parents' most recent federal tax return or SSI benefits statement or MFIP/welfare benefits statement.

5.  A copy of your most recent high school transcript (and/or college transcript if applicable). 

All materials must be received by MIGIZI Communications (3123 East Lake St. Mpls MN  55406) by June 1, 2008 (allow 5 days for delivery).  You will be notified in late June about the status of your application.
